C.Y.O: Tried + Tested

The brand C.Y.O (or 'Call It Your Own') has been around for a while now - I think around a year, but don't quote me on that - and for some reason I have never really given it a go. I'm the type of person who likes to stick to the brands I know and love and I rarely step out of my comfort zone - makeup wise or other - but I decided it was time to change this, and I am so glad I did.

So off I went to my local Boots store to pick up some products to try out and I was happily surprised by the selection; they have everything from foundation to lip liner, and the packaging is gorgeous, very 'Sleek'-esk. Not to mention the fact that everything is so affordable - nothing is priced above £7.50! I picked out six products that took my fancy and I have been trying them out for a week or two so I could share my thoughts with you.

'Girls on Contour' Contour Kit The C.Y.O contour kit comes in 3 shades, 'Fair', 'Medium' and  'Dark', and consists of 1 pressed highlight shade and 1 pressed contour. Obviously, I opted for 'fair' and I have been using it everyday since I bought it. I will be honest, I haven't tried the highlight shade yet but it seems like the perfect shade for your brow bone, to give a natural-looking lift. The contour however, I have tried, and love it! It is the perfect shade for fair skin, and doesn't have any orange undertones to it. Pigmentation wise, it is fairly pigmented so make sure to tap off any excess off before applying it!

'Sweeping Statement' Metallic Eye Stick
Oh my goodness do I love this. The sticks come in 4 metallic shades and I chose 'Small Minds' which is beautiful coppery tone and they are such a quick and easy way to add a pop of colour to your look. They are incredibly pigmented and blend well, and the pointed tip makes it so easy to get right up to your lash line. Now, my eyelids are definitely on the oily side, so when I felt just how creamy this product was, I was a little sceptical about its lasting power, but let me tell you, it does not budge. By the end of the day, the rest of my makeup is practically sliding of my face but my eyelids are still going strong and shimmering away.

'J'Tame' Brow and Lash Gel Now this is a keeper! I love to use this after filling in the sparse areas of my brows with a pencil as it gives the perfect finish and adds that extra oomf. I use the shade 'Fair/Medium' which is a light brown without the red undertone, and it gets rid of that ashy look my brows have, whilst still making them look natural. You can also pick it up in 'Medium/Dark' or 'Clear'. At first I was a little confused by the applicator as it is double-sided and I don't think I will be using it on my lashes anytime soon, but for my eyebrows, I couldn't live without it. It lasts all day, and is smooth to touch, none of that crispy, flaky stuff.

'Turn on the Light' Illuminating Mixing Cream  As the name suggests, this product is designed to be mixed in with your foundation or moisturiser to give more of a dewy, illuminated look, but you can also use it as base, or on top of your foundation. To test this out, I dotted it over my skin first and then blended it in along with my foundation, and, I'm not going to lie, it wasn't my favourite. It didn't make my foundation any thicker or appear cakey, nor did it break me out, but, it just didn't do what I expected it to. I think I was under the impression it was going to make my skin look healthy and dewy, which to be fair, it never claims to do, but it just looked like I had put highlighter all over my face. However, that being said, I do love to use this everyday as cream highlight. Blending this in with my finger it melts into my skin and gives a natural glow (where a glow belongs).

'Lifeproof' Long Lasting Foundation I feel as if I need to wear this foundation a little more to properly give my view, and fully test the durability but, on first impressions, I like it. It gives a medium coverage, evens out my skin tone, conceals any red areas and doesn't sink into fine lines. I would say the product is best applied with a brush as it looks more natural this way and leaves a 'your skin but better' look - not matte, but also not too dewy. The palest shade (101) is perfect for a fairer complexion as it has a neutral undertone and isn't orange at all, however, for darker skin tones, the selection was very limited, almost none existent, which I think unfortunately, is just typical of drugstore brands.

'Crush on Metal' Metallic Eyeshadow Where do I begin with this product? The C.Y.O metallic eyeshadows are available in 5 shades, the one I bought being 'cooeeey!'. I found that although they were well pigmented when I swatched them with my finger, when it came to applying them to my eyelid with a brush, the colour pay off just wasn't the same, and by the end of the day the metallic side had almost completely disappeared, so maybe a good primer is required? Though, the shadow does blend very well, and I have noticed no fallout.

Have you tried out this brand? What did you think of it?

PHOEBE x

  5. I haven't tried C.Y.O yet but I always look at it when I go into boots, unsure of want to pick up as not many people talk about it. However, after reading this I'll definitely try the contour and eye sticks, especially since I am a quick eyeshadow type of gal! Thanks for the recommendations x
